Arizona Motorcycle Accidents How and Why They Happen

A Phoenix law enforcement officer suffered serious injury following a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago. The crash happened near the State Capitol around 10 p.m. Fortunately, the officer remained in stable condition and did not lose consciousness, according to The Arizona Republic.

Reportedly, the officer-involved regularly uses motorcycles as part of his duties. Inexperience is a common contributing factor in Arizona motorcycle accidents, but the officer’s story goes to show that even veteran bikers run a risk of serious injury when taking their motorcycles on the road.

There’s a misconception that aggressive bikers are usually responsible for nasty crashes. While that’s true in some cases, studies show that car drivers are more often at fault. That’s likely due to the difficulty that drivers have in seeing motorcycles — and their tendency to forget to look for them in the first place.

Aside from inexperience, the most common causes of Arizona motorcycle accidents include:

  • Motorcycle hidden in the driver’s blind spot
  • Drivers having a hard time seeing bikers at night
  • Parked cars opening their doors unexpectedly, directly into the path of an oncoming motorcycle
  • Failing to wear proper protective gear
  • Failing to obey traffic-control lights, stop signs, or the rules of the road
  • Sudden-stop collisions

That last item is especially perilous for motorcycles. While rear-end collisions are often less catastrophic when two cars are involved, even a low-impact rear-ender can prove fatal when a motorcycle is involved.
