Uber Settles Lawsuit Over Six-Year-Old Girl’s Death

Uber has just reached a settlement with the family of a six-year-old girl who was hit and killed by an Uber driver in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve back in 2013, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The settlement terms have not been disclosed, but given the young age of the victim, the tragic facts of the case, and the high-profile nature of the story, the financial payout may have been significant.

Uber is eager to distance itself from these kinds of stories. Meanwhile, the law on liability for ride-sharing crashes, like those involving Uber, remains in flux. One thing is clear, though: victims never have to bear the full financial burden of an accident that someone else caused.

Prior to settling, the young girl’s family had filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Uber, alleging multiple accounts of negligence. They concede that the driver was not transporting Uber passengers when the vehicle struck the young girl, her mother, and her brother in a San Francisco crosswalk. The driver was, however, logged into the Uber system at the time and was able to receive requests for pickup.

Wrongful death cases are always heartbreaking, especially when little children are involved. Young pedestrians are especially vulnerable to any collision. If you or your family has suffered a loss as a result of someone else’s negligence in Arizona, the Phoenix wrongful death attorneys may be able to help.
